Parks and Recreation Commission

The Parks and Recreation Commission is an advisory commission composed of five members appointed by the mayor, subject to confirmation by the city council. Its members must be qualified electors of the city and cannot be an employee or an elected or appointed official of the city.

Meetings are held the fourth Tuesday of each month at 6:00 pm and are open to the public.

Its duties are:
  • To recommend plans to the planning commission for developing, establishing, locating and expanding the city’s park system;
  • Aid and assist city council and the planning commission in the development of a civic center;
  • Recommend to the city administration plans, procedures and methods for the operation of present and future parks;
  • Interpret the attitudes and the recreational needs of the city and determine and recommend a program to satisfy these needs; and
  • Encourage citizen participation through both formal and informal groups in park maintenance and recreation programs by recruiting volunteers, stimulating formation of formal organizations and giving support through recommendation to the city council.
The commission receives supplemental financial support from Parks Partners, an auxiliary organization dedicated to park development and enhancement.
